Yes, Telus international roaming works in Mexico. As a Canadian carrier, Telus has roaming agreements with local Mexican networks, meaning your phone connects automatically when you arrive. Mexico falls under the Caribbean and Mexico zone for Telus Travel Pass options, alongside several Caribbean destinations.
That said, how well it works for you depends largely on which Telus plan you have and which roaming option you choose. There are meaningful differences between postpaid and prepaid users, and between the daily Easy Roam rate and the Travel Pass.
Telus currently offers three ways to use your Canadian number and data while in Mexico. Each works differently, and the right choice depends on how long you are travelling and how much data you expect to use.
Easy Roam is available to all Telus monthly plan customers and activates automatically when you use your phone in Mexico. It gives you access to your existing Canadian plan allowances while abroad, billed as a daily charge. To activate it manually before you go, send a text with the word TRAVEL to 7626. The service activates within about 30 seconds.
One thing to watch: the daily charge applies as soon as you use your phone, whether that is a call, a text, or even a background app check. If you step off the plane and your phone reconnects to the network, the clock starts. Keep data roaming switched off until you are ready to use it.
For longer stays, Telus offers a Travel Pass covering Mexico and select Caribbean destinations. The 7-day pass is the current option available in this zone. It must be activated via the My Telus app or website, and once purchased, it remains valid for 30 days from the date of purchase. This gives you some flexibility to start using it after you land rather than immediately.
The Travel Pass is worth considering if you plan to use your phone regularly throughout the trip, as it tends to offer better value than paying the daily Easy Roam rate for multiple consecutive days.
If you have not activated Easy Roam or a Travel Pass, your phone will still connect to a local Mexican network, but you will be billed at pay-per-use rates. These rates can become very expensive quickly, particularly for data. Telus itself recommends avoiding pay-per-use if you plan to browse the web or use maps. Check the My Telus app for current rates before your trip.
From late 2025, Telus introduced a new plan tier called Complete Explore, which bundles roaming to 68 international destinations, including Mexico, directly into the monthly plan. If you are on a Complete Explore plan, you may already have Mexico roaming included without needing a separate add-on. Check the My Telus app or your plan details to confirm.
Activation depends on which option you are using:
Regardless of which option you use, remember to enable data roaming in your phone settings after you land. Without this, your phone will not connect to a mobile network for data.
Telus partners with local Mexican network operators to provide coverage. In major cities and tourist destinations such as Mexico City, Cancun, Los Cabos, and Guadalajara, coverage is generally reliable. In more remote areas, signal quality depends on the local partner network, which may differ from what Telus provides in Canada.
If you plan to travel outside urban centres or popular resort areas, it is worth checking Telus coverage maps and the specific partner networks listed in the My Telus app before you go.
Telus roaming is convenient if keeping your Canadian number active is important. For receiving calls, banking verification codes, or staying reachable, roaming keeps everything on one number. But for travellers who mainly need data, a travel eSIM is often a more cost-effective option.
Consider a travel eSIM if:
A TurkSIM eSIM installs digitally via QR code before you leave Canada. Your Telus SIM stays active for calls and texts on your Canadian number, while the eSIM handles data through local Mexican networks. Most current smartphones support eSIM (dual SIM: physical SIM and eSIM) at the same time.
Mexico is one of those destinations where your phone becomes essential from the moment you land. Google Maps through chaotic airport exits, WhatsApp to coordinate with your Airbnb host, Google Translate at the taco stand that has no English menu. Data is not a luxury here, it is how you navigate.
Telus roaming keeps your Canadian number active, which matters. But for the data side of things, a TurkSIM eSIM Mexico connects you directly to local Mexican networks like Telcel and AT&T Mexico, the same networks locals use. No Canadian carrier routing, no daily charge ticking in the background.
A few things that make a difference specifically in Mexico:
Yes. Mexico is included in Telus Easy Roam coverage. All Telus monthly plan customers can use Easy Roam in Mexico. To activate it before you go, text TRAVEL to 7626 or use the My Telus app. The service activates within about 30 seconds.
Yes. Telus offers a 7-day Travel Pass for the Mexico and Caribbean zone. It can be purchased through the My Telus app and remains valid for 30 days from purchase, giving you flexibility on when to start using it during your trip.
Prepaid options are more limited than postpaid. Some Telus prepaid plans support roaming, but not all include Easy Roam by default. Check your specific plan in the My Telus app before travelling to confirm what is available to you.
Your phone will connect to a local Mexican network automatically, but you will be billed at pay-per-use rates. These rates are significantly higher than plan-based roaming options. Telus recommends always activating a roaming option before using data abroad.
Yes. Most modern smartphones support dual SIM (physical SIM plus eSIM). You can keep your Telus SIM active for your Canadian number and use a TurkSIM eSIM for data. This way you stay reachable on your Canadian number without relying on Telus roaming data rates.
5G roaming availability in Mexico depends on the local partner network. In most destinations, Telus roaming connections use 4G/LTE even if your Canadian plan includes 5G. Check the Telus roaming page for the latest information on supported network technologies per destination.
