Japan has a way of making you realise how dependent you are on your phone. Navigating the Tokyo Metro without Google Maps is an exercise in patience most travellers prefer to skip. Finding the right exit at Shinjuku Station, switching between the Yamanote Line and the Chuo-Sobu Line, or tracking a ryokan address in a narrow Kyoto backstreet: all of it runs on data. Singaporeans on GOMO often assume their plan covers Japan without thinking too hard about it, and for many it does. But there are specific limitations worth knowing before you land at Narita or Kansai International.
GOMO is a Singtel brand, and Japan is covered through Singtel's roaming partnerships with three of Japan's major operators: KDDI (au), NTT Docomo, and SoftBank. On any given connection, your device will pick the strongest available signal from these three. You cannot lock to a specific carrier manually, but in practice coverage in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Hokkaido's main cities is solid on all three networks.
Japan falls under GOMO's Asia roaming category rather than the five-destination bundle used for Australia. This means it draws from a different data pool depending on your plan. The 5G+ Value plan includes 10GB of Asia roaming, which covers Japan. The 5G+ Core and higher plans expand this further. Plans without an Asia or Worldwide component require a separate Roam More add-on purchased through the GOMO app before or during your trip.
An important technical note: Japan's networks operate on slightly different LTE bands compared to Singapore. Modern dual-band and tri-band devices handle this without issues, but if you are carrying an older phone, verify band compatibility before departure. 5G roaming in Japan is not guaranteed and depends on partner agreements at the time of your trip.

Check which category Japan falls under on your specific plan. Japan is part of GOMO's Asia roaming allocation, not the five-destination bundle (Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand/Taiwan/Australia). If you recently used Asia roaming data in, say, Bangkok, that usage reduces what's available for Tokyo.
Download offline maps before landing. Google Maps Japan offline works well, and Navitime has a solid Japan transit app. Having offline backup means that if your roaming connection drops in a rural area or deep underground on the Tokyo subway, you are not stranded.
Pocket WiFi competition in Japan is fierce and fast. Japan's pocket WiFi rental market at airports is well-developed. If your GOMO plan does not include sufficient Japan data, renting a pocket WiFi at Narita Terminal 2 or Kansai International is a reliable backup that does not require purchasing a roaming add-on.
SoftBank and Docomo both have strong indoor penetration in Japan. Japan's concrete construction and basement shopping areas can challenge signal strength, but both SoftBank and Docomo perform well in underground stations and shopping centres where GOMO is likely to connect.
Purchase add-ons before departure, not after landing. While you can buy GOMO add-ons from within Japan, the process is easier from Singapore with a stable WiFi connection. Trying to navigate the GOMO app on slow hotel WiFi adds unnecessary friction.
The fair use throttle on Infinity plans kicks in at 10GB. On the Asia Infinity plan, once you exceed 10GB in Japan, speeds drop. For a week of heavy usage including navigation, social posting, and occasional video calls, 10GB is achievable. Budget accordingly.
For Singaporeans on the base 5G Value plan, Japan is not included in the monthly allocation at all. A Roam More add-on is required, and the cost of that add-on for a week-long trip to Japan may not be significantly cheaper than a dedicated Japan eSIM that carries its own fixed data for the trip duration.
The shared Asia pool problem also applies here. If your plan includes 10GB of Asia roaming and you have already used 6GB in Vietnam or Thailand earlier in the same billing month, you arrive in Japan with 4GB remaining. For a 10-day itinerary that includes Kyoto temple hopping, Osaka food tours, and a Hakone day trip, 4GB goes quickly when you factor in Maps navigation running all day.
A dedicated Japan eSIM solves this cleanly. It carries its own data allocation, activates on arrival at Narita or KIX, and does not touch your GOMO monthly balance. Your Singapore number stays active on the GOMO SIM for incoming messages and banking OTPs, while the eSIM handles all local data needs.
Japan trips from Singapore tend to be longer than regional hops. A week in Tokyo followed by three nights in Kyoto and a final night in Osaka is a standard itinerary, and it is data-intensive from start to finish. The Tokyo Metro app, Google Maps in bicycle-unfriendly Kyoto, Tabelog restaurant bookings, and constant photo uploads to Instagram add up quickly. On a 10GB Asia roaming pool shared with every other destination you have visited this month, running out mid-trip is a real risk.
The GOMO roaming infrastructure in Japan is solid. KDDI and SoftBank both have strong coverage in rural areas that day-trip travellers visit, including Nikko, Hakone, and the Japanese Alps. But solid coverage does not solve the data allocation problem. In most Tokyo Metro stations, yes. Japan's subway operators have invested significantly in underground mobile coverage, and major stations on the Yamanote Line, Ginza Line, and Marunouchi Line have reliable 4G LTE coverage.
