Koodo is a mid-market Canadian carrier owned by TELUS, and it sits in an interesting position when it comes to international travel. Its roaming product, Easy Roam, is genuinely one of the more straightforward options among Canadian carriers: you pay a daily fee only on days you actually use your phone abroad, and your existing Canadian plan's minutes, texts and data travel with you. No separate data pack to buy, no complex plan switching. For many Koodo users, that simplicity is the appeal. But the daily rate adds up on longer trips, and some destinations sit outside Easy Roam's coverage entirely, where pay-per-use rates kick in fast. This guide covers how Koodo international roaming works, what the Travel Pass options offer for longer trips, and when an eSIM is the more cost-effective choice.
Koodo's primary international roaming product is Easy Roam. It is a pay-per-day service that activates automatically the moment you make or receive a call, send a text, use data, or check voicemail while travelling. You are charged the daily Easy Roam fee once per day, and that fee covers access to your regular Koodo plan's allowances for the remainder of that calendar day in the time zone where you are travelling.
There are two Easy Roam tiers. Easy Roam USA costs CAD $16 per day and covers the US mainland, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Easy Roam International costs CAD $18 per day and covers 200+ countries and territories outside the US. On both plans, incoming calls are free. Phone calls to numbers in Canada and your destination country are included. Calls to any other country trigger pay-per-use rates on top of the daily fee.
One important point on plan data: Easy Roam does not give you extra data. It lets you use whatever data allowance is on your existing Koodo monthly plan while roaming. If your plan comes with 10GB per month, that same 10GB pool is what you draw from abroad. If you need more, you can top up at Koodo's Canadian rates from within the app. And if you are on a Koodo prepaid plan, Easy Roam is not available at all. Easy Roam only works with monthly postpaid plans.
For destinations outside Easy Roam International's coverage, Koodo users can still use their phone, but will be charged pay-per-use rates for voice, text and data. These vary by country and can be significantly more expensive than the daily fee. Activating the International Voice Roaming and International Data Roaming add-ons first is required for pay-per-use access to work at all in non-Easy-Roam destinations.
In late 2024, Koodo introduced Easy Roam Travel Passes: pre-purchased bundles of Easy Roam days at a lower effective daily cost than the standard CAD $16 or $18 rate. These are currently available for four destination zones:
Travel Passes work on the same Easy Roam logic: your plan's existing minutes, texts and data travel with you, and the pass covers the daily Easy Roam charge for the number of days purchased. Once the pass expires, Easy Roam International daily charges resume if still needed. Calls to countries other than Canada and your current destination are not covered and will trigger pay-per-use charges even with a pass active. Add Easy Roam to your account before you travel. Text ROAM to 7626 or log in to Koodo Self Serve to enable Easy Roam on your line. Once added, it stays active for all future trips. Easy Roam activates automatically when it detects usage abroad, so you do not need to switch anything on at the airport.
Add the International Voice Roaming and International Data Roaming add-ons. These are separate from Easy Roam itself and are required for your phone to access networks in any destination. Without them, roaming will not work even with Easy Roam enabled. Check Koodo Self Serve to confirm both add-ons are on your account.
If travelling to Europe, activate your pass in advance. Travel Passes start counting from the first day of use in-country, not from activation date. You can activate the pass before departure so it is ready the moment you land.
If you do not use your phone for a full day, you are not charged. Easy Roam only activates when you make or answer a call, send a text, or use data. Keep your phone on Airplane mode during transit days or days when you do not need connectivity and you will not be billed.
Koodo Easy Roam does not cover satellite or cruise ship usage. If your travel involves time at sea or in remote areas served by satellite networks, pay-per-use rates apply and can be very high. In those situations, turning off data roaming entirely is the safer approach.
For a three or four-day US trip, Easy Roam at CAD $16/day is a reasonable and convenient option, particularly if you value keeping your Canadian number reachable. The simplicity of the one-click daily charge appeals to travellers who do not want to think about data management at all.
For longer trips or destinations with heavier data demands, the daily rate starts to feel less efficient. CAD $18/day for two weeks in Europe adds up to CAD $252, before you factor in any calls to third countries. The Europe Travel Pass brings this down significantly, but even at CAD $60 for 30 days, you are still tied to your existing Koodo plan's data pool. If your plan is modest on data, that is a meaningful constraint abroad.
Easy Roam is also only available on monthly postpaid plans. Koodo prepaid users have no roaming option at all, making a travel eSIM the only workable solution for those customers. And for destinations outside Easy Roam's 200+ country list, pay-per-use rates vary and can be steep.
Koodo users who travel internationally for more than a week, especially outside the US, quickly notice that the daily roaming cost becomes the dominant line item in their travel budget. A two-week trip to Japan at CAD $18/day is a CAD $252 roaming bill before any overages. A month of digital nomad work in Southeast Asia at the same rate is over CAD $500. For those travellers, the economics of a dedicated eSIM are clear.
For destinations like Japan, Thailand, Mexico and Turkey, TurkSIM eSIMs connect via established local carriers, including partners like NTT Docomo and SoftBank in Japan, AIS and DTAC in Thailand, and Telcel in Mexico. Coverage is local-grade rather than roaming-grade, which in practical terms often means more consistent performance in rural and off-the-beaten-track destinations.
The dual-SIM setup is the most important piece of this: your Koodo SIM stays in your phone throughout the trip, handling your Canadian number for calls from family and two-factor authentication texts. The eSIM handles data only, at a flat prepaid rate. Koodo prepaid users, who have no Easy Roam option at all, have even stronger reason to go this route, as it is the only way to get mobile data internationally.
