Three UK's roaming structure went through a significant change on 22 June 2025, and Turkey landed in a position that catches many customers off guard. While Three customers on Go Binge or older Advanced plans once enjoyed free roaming in Turkey through their annual day allocation, the updated rules place Turkey in a zone that requires a daily charge on most current plan types. If you are planning a trip to Istanbul, the Turkish Riviera, or Cappadocia on a Three UK SIM, the details of your specific contract now matter considerably more than they did before.
As of June 22, 2025, Three UK restructured its roaming into two main categories. Value plans cover EU roaming at £2/day across 49 destinations, but Turkey is not in the EU zone on Three. Complete plans include roaming in 160+ worldwide destinations as part of the monthly allowance, which does cover Turkey for customers on qualifying Complete packages. Pay As You Go customers access Go Roam in 22 destinations, which does not include Turkey.
For most Three UK customers on standard current plans, Turkey falls under the Go Roam Around the World Extra zone, which carries a charge of £7 per day when roaming. This daily charge covers calls, texts, and data from your existing UK allowance, subject to a fair use cap of 12GB per month while roaming. Calls to local Turkish numbers cost extra and are not covered by the daily Go Roam fee, which only applies to calls made to or received from UK numbers.
Customers who signed contracts before June 22, 2025 may still have access to their original roaming terms including free roaming days per year (between 14 and 56 depending on contract length). These legacy terms remain valid until contract renewal. If you renewed after June 22, 2025, the new structure applies.
Information as of March 2026. Check the Three UK app or website for your specific contract terms before travelling.
The 12GB fair use cap applies to data used while roaming internationally on Three UK. If you exceed 12GB in a calendar month while abroad, Three may restrict data speeds or ask you to return to the UK before full speed resumes.
Check whether you are on a pre or post-June 2025 contract before booking. Log into the Three UK app and navigate to Roaming. Your plan will clearly show which roaming zone Turkey falls under and whether any legacy roaming day allocation remains. This single check determines your entire cost structure for the trip.
On Value plans, the £7/day charge is per calendar day, not per 24 hours. A connection at 11:30 PM Turkish time triggers a full day's charge. A connection at 12:01 AM the following morning triggers another. Minimising data use on travel days (first and last day) can reduce the total daily charge count.
Local Turkish calls cost extra regardless of your plan. The Go Roam daily fee covers calls to and from UK numbers only. Calling a Turkish hotel, taxi, or restaurant costs £1.40 per minute as a standard charge. For regular local calling needs, this adds up quickly and is one of the clearest arguments for a local eSIM with calling support.
The 12GB monthly roaming cap is shared across all countries visited. If you roam in Spain for a week earlier in the month and use 8GB, you arrive in Turkey with only 4GB remaining under the fair use cap. For a longer Turkey trip following other European destinations, the cap becomes a practical constraint.
Three Go Roam passes are available as an alternative to daily charges. Three offers 3-day, 7-day, and 14-day Go Roam passes that may offer a lower overall cost than paying £7 per day for a full week's trip. Check the Three app for current pass pricing before departure.
Wi-Fi calling is worth activating before departure. Three UK supports Wi-Fi calling (Wifi Call on Three), which allows you to make and receive UK-number calls over hotel or café WiFi without triggering a roaming day charge. Configure this before leaving the UK.
At £7 per day, a two-week Turkey holiday costs £98 in Three roaming charges before you account for local calls. A 10-day trip costs £70. These are not trivial sums, particularly for a Value plan customer who expected EU-style roaming pricing and did not read the fine print around Turkey's zone classification.
The maths shift significantly in favour of a dedicated Turkey eSIM for any trip over five days on a Value plan. A prepaid eSIM for Turkey carries a fixed data allowance for the trip duration, typically at a fraction of the per-day roaming cost. Local Turkish calls, which Three charges at £1.40/min, can be made through WhatsApp or Facetime Audio over eSIM data at no additional cost.
Complete plan customers have better roaming economics in Turkey, but still face the fair use cap and the local calls limitation. Running a Turkey eSIM as the primary data SIM while using the Three SIM in standby for incoming UK calls combines the best of both approaches.
The June 2025 roaming restructure effectively made Turkey a premium roaming destination for Three Value plan customers. At £7/day, a standard two-week holiday on the Turkish coast or in Istanbul costs more in roaming charges than many budget flights from the United Kingdom. Value plan customers who previously relied on legacy roaming days for Turkey now face a clear financial argument for switching to a local eSIM.
Turkey's mobile infrastructure has improved substantially in recent years. Turkcell's 4G LTE network covers Istanbul comprehensively, including the historic peninsula, Beyoglu, and Asian-side districts like Kadikoy and Uskudar. Along the Aegean and Mediterranean coast, Vodafone Turkey provides solid coverage in Bodrum, Antalya, Marmaris, and Fethiye. In Cappadocia, Turk Telekom covers the main tourist areas including Goreme and Uchisar reliably, which matters when you are navigating volcanic rock formations and booking last-minute balloon flights.
A TurkSIM eSIM Turkey installs via QR code before departure from the UK, activates the moment you land at Istanbul Ataturk or Sabiha Gokcen, and runs on these local networks directly. The Three SIM stays in standby mode for incoming UK calls and texts, meaning family and colleagues can still reach you on your UK number without the call routing through a £1.40/min international leg.
Yes, Three UK has roaming coverage in Turkey. Since the June 2025 restructure, Value plan customers pay £7/day to roam in Turkey (Go Roam Around the World Extra zone). Complete plan customers may have Turkey included in their monthly allowance. Pre-June 2025 contracts may still have legacy free roaming day allocations. Check the Three app for your specific terms.
For Value plan customers on post-June 2025 contracts, Turkey costs £7 per calendar day when you use data, calls, or texts. Calls to local Turkish numbers cost £1.40 per minute regardless of plan. Complete plan customers have Turkey included, subject to the 12GB monthly fair use cap for international roaming.
Turkey is in the Go Roam Around the World Extra zone, not the standard Go Roam zone. This distinction matters for pricing: Go Roam destinations are included more broadly, while Go Roam Around the World Extra destinations such as Turkey carry the £7/day charge for Value plan customers.
Three UK applies a 12GB monthly fair use cap on international roaming data. This cap is cumulative across all countries visited in a calendar month, not per-destination. If you exceed 12GB while roaming internationally in any given month, Three may apply speed restrictions.
Yes. Three UK's Wi-Fi calling feature (Wifi Call on Three) allows you to make and receive calls to your UK number over any WiFi connection without triggering a roaming day charge. This is worth activating in the Three app before departure. Note that Wi-Fi calling requires a compatible device and does not cover calls to local Turkish numbers.
For most Value plan customers on post-June 2025 contracts, yes. At £7/day, a week in Turkey costs £49 in roaming charges alone, not counting local calls at £1.40/min. A dedicated Turkey eSIM for the same trip duration typically costs significantly less and includes data on Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, or Türk Telekom networks directly.
